John Kruth and I are producing a show called Tin Supreme: Homage to Tin Ujevic at the Bowery Poetry Club (308 Bowery in Manhattan) on Saturday April 21, 2007 at 6 PM.
We were introduced to Ujevic's (1891 - 1955) poetry while visiting Split, Croatia two summers ago and were stunned, the writing is powerful and holds up beautifully in translation. Ujevic is read by everyone in Croatia but he's unknown here. This is our attempt to introduce his work to an English speaking audience.
Ujevic's poetry will be read in Croatian and English. Music will be provided by John Kruth, who will sing songs written and inspired by our travels in Croatia and by Panonian Wave, a band that plays original and traditional compositions in a Croatian folk-roots style.
Poets who will read Ujevic's work include Anne Waldman, John S. Hall, Vicki Hudspith and Carla Bosnjak.
There's also an accompanying art exhibit by Croatian artist Pavo Majic featuring portraits of European and American literary figures.
